Enough

“Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” -Genesis 3:11
This question from God has recently struck me. Not only was this question asked in the garden, but we still let it happen in our hearts today. God wasn’t simply asking Adam and Eve about their disobedience, He was asking them about the voice they chose to believe. He was asking who told them something that He Himself never said.
I can’t help but think, who told us? Who told you that you weren’t enough? Who told you that you were unworthy, unlovable, unwanted, or incapable? Who convinced you to believe a lie that God never spoke over your life?
For many years, I carried around lies that didn’t belong to me. Lies from society, from past relationships, from moments of failure or insecurity. I believed the lies whispered by people who were hurting as well. Slowly, without even knowing it, I let those lies shape the way I saw myself. I let them define my identity more loudly than the voice of my Father.
But God’s question echoes through scripture and straight to my heart. “Who told you that?” Because it certainly wasn’t Him.
Like Adam and Eve, we often find ourselves accepting a version of ourselves that God never intended. It seems unfathomable that they could walk with God in the garden, hear His voice daily and still fall for deception. Yet we do the same! We have God’s promises in front of us, His spirit within us, and His love all around us. Still, we often choose the noise over the truth.
God asked Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit, not because He was withholding something good from them, but because He was protecting them from harm. In the same way, His words, His commands, His identity spoken over us are meant to protect us from the lies that try to seep into our souls.
So today, pause and ask yourself: Whose voice am I believing? Who told me I wasn’t enough?
Then let God answer with His truth: You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You are loved. You are chosen. And you are enough- because He says you are.
