True North Adventures: Lessons from Our Bible Buddies

Last week, I had the joy of witnessing nearly 300 children walk through Dutilh’s doors to experience Vacation Bible School. VBS is always a highlight for me, especially as I get to watch my three children enjoy fellowship, Bible study, and summer fun with their friends. This year’s theme was True North: Finding Your Way in a World Gone Wild.

Throughout the week, the kids learned that Jesus is our True North — a steadfast, unshakable foundation to guide us no matter what life brings. Each day, they met new Bible Buddies who led them through the Book of Mark and shared simple but powerful truths that resonated with the VBS kids and myself.

Here’s what our Bible Buddies reminded us throughout the week:

  • Ponder the Sea Otter: When we wonder, we can trust Jesus. Whether we’re anxious about the future or questioning our purpose, we can trust that Jesus is enough — even when the path ahead is unclear.

  • Clawdia the King Crab: When we feel alone, we can trust Jesus. In seasons of loneliness, it’s comforting to know that we are never truly on our own. Jesus is always in our corner.

  • Kody the Bear: When we feel powerless, we can trust Jesus. When we hit a breaking point, mentally or physically, we can rely on the strength and constancy of Christ.

  • Earnest the Bald Eagle: When we need hope, we can trust Jesus. In a world that can often feel overwhelming, placing our hope in Jesus helps us rise above despair.

  • Bruce the Moose: When we need help, we can trust Jesus. Help comes in many forms — a kind word, a friend’s support, or an answered prayer. Jesus is always working, even in the quiet moments.

It was a beautiful week full of laughter and learning, and I’m so thankful that my kids and I  get to experience it year after year. What a gift to have this time together, growing in faith and being reminded that no matter what, Jesus is always our True North!
