All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

During Sunday’s Worship in the Park Service, Pastor Tom mentioned a credo penned by Robert Fulghum, titled “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” For those unfamiliar, a credo, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is a guiding belief or principle that shapes how we live our lives. When I got home, I was thinking of Pastor Tom’s sermon and decided to take a moment to look up Robert Fulghum’s words. If you’ve never read it, you can find an excerpt of his credo, here.

Fulghum’s credo focuses on simplicity of life’s basic rules that we often overlook as adults—like sharing, playing fair, and cleaning up our own messes. But what struck me the most was how he ended his credo: “...when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.” Fulghum goes on to elaborate, saying, “It’s impossible to go through life alone. We need to find our support group—family, friends, companions, therapy gatherings, team, church, or whatever.”

And isn’t that the truth? Life becomes richer and more meaningful when we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. There’s a special kind of comfort in knowing that you have a group of people who will walk alongside you, sharing in both your struggles and your triumphs. These are the people who will lift you up when you’re down and celebrate with you when life brings joy.

This reflection naturally brought my thoughts to our upcoming Ministry Fair. On September 8th, Dutilh Church will transform Fellowship Hall into a hub of connection, with tables set up to provide information about our various ministries and small groups. This event is more than just an opportunity to learn about what we offer; it’s a chance to find your community within Dutilh Church. Whether you’re looking for a place to deepen your faith, serve others, or simply find a group of friends who share your interests, there’s truly something for everyone.

So, as you consider Robert Fulghum’s wise words and the importance of sticking together, I encourage you to take that step at our Ministry Fair. Come explore the many ways you can connect, grow, and find your people here at Dutilh Church. After all, life is best lived when we hold hands and walk through it together.
