The Magic of Christmas, Yesterday and Today

By: Heather Shoffstall, Director of Student Ministry

Christmas Eve has always held a different kind of magic for me. It’s the quiet anticipation, the flicker of candlelight, and the echoes of carols that stay with you long after the music fades.

Growing up, my brothers and I would spend the evening relentlessly begging our parents to let us open just one gift. When I had my own children, Grant and Kendra, I made sure that "one gift" became a cornerstone of our night. Every year followed a sacred rhythm: we’d attend service and light the candles as Silent Night was sung, pose for a photo in front of the beautiful tree in the church sanctuary, then rush home to open that special package (usually PJs), and get lost in the wonder of The Polar Express.

Now that my children are adults, our Christmas Eves look different. We rarely share the night under the same roof anymore, and the old traditions have quietly shifted into new seasons of life.

But as my own home has grown quieter, my heart has found a new joy. In my role at the church, I now get the privilege of watching other families come together. I see the same wonder and excitement in the children’s eyes that I once saw in my own. It’s a beautiful reminder that while our personal traditions may change, the "Reason for the Season" never changes.

Over 2,000 years ago, in the tiny town of Bethlehem, our Savior was born. Jesus was, is, and always will be the Messiah. No matter who is sitting at your table this year—or even if your table feels a little emptier than usual—know that Jesus remains the same.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  Hebrews 13:8

Thank you for being part of my Christmas Eve this year. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
