Called and Sent: Parenthood

On Sunday, Pastor Tom concluded our latest sermon series, “Walking the Talk.” In the final installment, we reflected on the concept of acting in God’s likeness, and how this can be accomplished through love within our own families. As Mother’s Day coincided with this reflection, it prompted me to dive deeper into my role as both a Christian and a mother.

In this season of life, my largest and most meaningful role is to nurture my children and help them grow their relationship with God. Pastor Tom outlined five guiding principles for those called and sent on a mission from God. Reflecting on these principles, I believe parents can delve deeper into their significance too:

Never Go Alone: Parenthood is a collective endeavor, requiring support from various quarters. It’s important to remember that asking for help, advice, and guidance, whether it be through family, friends, neighbors, or church friends, is needed and it helps create meaningful relationships for us as parents, as well as our children.

Take Authority from Jesus: As ambassadors of Christ to our children, our duty is to exemplify kindness and nurture a life centered around God. Our goal should be that we are the greatest role models for our children and live our lives in God’s likeness.

Cultivate a Simple Life: It’s easy to get caught up trying to provide our children with the best childhood possible. Many times, we do this by focusing on materialistic wants. This is a good reminder that simplicity is supreme. Our children’s true needs are met through the love and care we provide daily.

Fully Depend on Jesus: In the throes of motherhood, relinquishing control to God alleviates anxiety, fostering trust in His plans.

Focus on Faithfulness, Not Results: Mistakes are inevitable, but through faithfulness to God, we should embrace growth, learning, and resilience throughout our journey as parents.

In embracing these principles, we not only navigate the challenges of parenthood but also nurture an environment where our children flourish in faith and love. Let us embark on this journey with open hearts, trusting in God’s guidance every step of the way.
