A Final Call for Cantata Musicians
Written By: Rob Lynch, Director of Traditional Music
I’ll shamelessly recruit anywhere and everywhere, so why not in a blog as well? Rehearsals have begun for both the Cantata Choir and the instrumentalists, but it’s not too late to join!
This year’s cantata is titled ‘Shout the Good News!’ It begins with Old Testament prophecy from Isaiah and culminates in the angels announcing Christ’s birth, singing, “Glory to God in the highest!”
The Cantata Choir is an excellent opportunity to try out our ministry for a season. I’m biased, but I believe if you just give it a try, you’ll find a ministry full of incredible volunteers and a family of loving and welcoming folks. We rehearse once a week on Thursdays from 7-8 pm in the Sanctuary, and we have a great deal of online resources to practice and listen at home.
I am routinely blown away by the talent found amongst the congregation, but I know there are more folks that I haven’t yet met. Do you play an instrument, or perhaps have you played in the past and haven’t had the opportunity to play your instrument in years? This is your moment! We have musicians of all skill levels in the ensemble: from kids learning in band at school to adult professionals. All are welcome, and we’ve got a part for you. Everyone is welcome, everyone will be challenged, and everyone will be supported. The ensemble meets on Saturday mornings from 10-11am.
Preparing and presenting a cantata exclusively with volunteers from our congregation should be a source of pride for our church. It’s not a disclaimer to say, “Well, we’re just volunteers,” but a testament to how we can come together with our varied abilities and create something incredible.
Please prayerfully consider joining us. Yes, it is yet another weekly commitment in our already packed calendars, but as I’m sure members of the choir and orchestra will attest, it is a fulfilling and wonderful way to bring us into the season of Advent as we prepare for Christ’s birth.
